The Warning Signs of Infection

Mild discomfort is expected after both a medical and surgical abortion; however, there are more serious signs of infection you should be watching out for, such as:

  • Heavy bleeding, such as soaking two or more pads per hour for two consecutive hours
  • Fast heart rate
  • Foul-smelling odor from the vagina
  • Chills or body aches
  • A fever that starts after misoprostol
  • Severe abdominal pain that gets worse instead of improving
  • Persistent dizziness or lightheadedness

If you start to experience any of these symptoms, get medical help straight away to prevent further complications from happening.

How Infection Happens Post Abortion

Most infections after an abortion occur due to bacteria entering the uterus or because of an incomplete abortion, when pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus.

Aftercare instructions typically include refraining from sexual intercourse for two to three weeks and attending a follow-up appointment to help reduce the risk of infection.

Signs of infection should not be ignored if you have had an abortion. If left untreated, infection can lead to more serious complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which may increase the risk of future fertility issues or ectopic pregnancy.
